1889 Prescription Apothecary Progressive Druggist Detroit Mich. for Morphine

  • Condition: This antique prescription and envelope was written in 1889 by HENRY J. MILBURN, Progressive Druggist, 81 Woodward Ave., DETROIT MICH. Prescription includes "2 grains of Sulph of Zinc, 1 grain of Morphine, 1 oz of water, and 1 oz rosewater" . This prescription was written during the "First Opioid Epidemic". In 1889 Boston physician James Adams estimated that about 150,000 people were "medical addicts". This remnant of that time includes the hand written prescription . It is readable, though a bit faded. It comes in the original envelope which is dated "Oct. 17, 1889" and includes the name, title, and address of the druggist. The envelope has never been sealed and the glue one would lick is still present. The flap has come loose on one end and there is small area of the envelope wall which has let loose. There are 2 small folds, one with a small tear. It really is in amazing condition for having been written over 130 years ago! Please see photos for further details.
