Description

This cast iron crocodile cork press can be dated in the late 19th or early 20th century. This crocodile is a decorative object with a wonderful history. It is in very good condition. Until the 1930s, corks were used to seal bottles of medical preparations so they could be taken home by the customer. Corks needed to be pressed and moulded in order to fit the bottle neck. This crocodile-shaped cork press has four different sized holes for pressing corks and it worked by lifting the tail up and down. Each foot of the crocodile has a hole to screw it on the wooden counter. The crocodile was, during the previous centuries, a symbol for the pharmacy.
