On November 10, 1972, the U.S. Postal Service issued these
    Pharmacy
8¢ gummed stamps in Cincinnati, OH - to honor American pharmacists and commemorate the 120th anniversary of the American Pharmaceutical Association.
The stamp depicts a mortar and pestle, bowl of hygieia, and 19th century medicine bottles. The artwork is by Ken Davies of Madison, CT.
The Bowl of Hygieia (a cup or chalice with a snake coiled around its stem) is one of the symbols of pharmacology, and one of the most ancient and important symbols related to medicine in western countries. Hygieia was the Greek goddess of health and hygiene. The bowl of Hygieia is a common symbol on signs outside pharmacies in Europe. A mortar and pestle is a more common symbol in the United States. Also in the stamp design is "Rx" - the abbreviation for "recipe".
